Proposal Methods
First you will need to assemble the trap for the insects. Total you will be creating two traps, try at all times to make them as similar as possible. Think of similarity when you go buy the materials

Part 1 Assembly of Can
Step 1 - Drill 5
holes using a drill and a 2mm drill bit (it is recommended to mark with a Sharpe
then Drill) at 1cm&35cm Diameter at 5.6cm deep (Measure From Top),
5cm&30cm Diameter at 5.6cm deep, 10cm&25cm Diameter at 5.6cm deep,
15cm&45cm Diameter at 5.8cm deep, 20cm&40cm Diameter at 5.8cm deep.
Step 2 - String 1ft of 2mm wire through each corresponding hole above (ex.
Start at 1cm through the hole to 35cm and out) leave an equal amount of wire on
each side (about two inches) then bend the wire any way to secure it (Make
sure the wire is still in place as in not bent inside the can). After you bent
the wire trim it to about 1in on each side.
Step 3 - Cut the 1/4in wire mesh 12in by 12in then cut the 1/2in wire
mesh to fit snug inside the can use the circumference of the top to aid in
this.
Step 4 - With the 1/4in mesh feed in the middle two pieces of 2mm wire, cut
to about 1in, like you were sewing, do this in an x shape. Place that inside.
Step 5 - Then grab a small handful of the Polly carbonate stuffing (bear
stuffing), use two pieces of 2mm wire at about 1 1/2ft bend it in the middle
and use the wire to secure the stuffing (you poke in the center of the stuffing
and at the bottom of the mesh you will see the core of the
stuffing). You will use about four or five of these handfuls. Make sure
the stuffing is away from the sides of the can by one inch, and away from the
top by half of an inch.
Step 6 - Make sure the top 1cm mesh fits on top flush without folding
or bending in any way (remember this). Place the wire on top evenly to all
sides. Bend the wire evenly on all sides. You will find that there are four
corners that are poking up cut an inch by inch square (be sure to not void the
first sentence). The hammer will come in handy with
hammering the worm drive to about 1/4in from the top.
Then use the worm drive clamp to secure it on.
Putting the coffee
can in the ground (Do not camouflage the trap due to pit fall hazards) Step 1 – Find the selected areas
that are marked with pink flags and are at these GPS coordinates 1
Common Rush (LCAlpha) N04437235 E12315613 2 Small-Flowered Bulrush (LCBeta) N04437246 E12315608 Step 2 – Dig a hole at each place that
will fit snug and level with the ground for a 39oz coffee can Step 3 – Place a coffee can in each spot make sure it is
level with the ground and that there are no gaps between it and the dirt (fill in the empty spots Make it level all around).
Part 2 Performing the study (For performing the study it is recommended that you have gloves) Step 1 – After the cans are placed in the ground wait 15
hours then check each for bugs by following “The Procedures.” (my estimation is
30min-10min of work per can)
The Procedures (you can do this with or without removing the can from the ground (removing it is recommended)) Step 1 – Check for animals that are
not insects. If there is a rodent of some type remove it accordingly. Step 2 – Remove the top mesh with a
straight slot screwdriver and your gloves. Step 3 – Check for bugs on the
second mesh collect them using pliers/tweezers then take a photo of them. Then record the photo number on the The Data Sheet. Step 4 – Move the insects
approximately 10 feet away from the can in a similar environment. Step 5 – After all the bugs are
analyzed and recorded on the second mesh (make sure to check the Polly Carbonate); remove the second mesh and record the
insects in the bottom. Step 6 – Move the insects
approximately 10 feet away from the can in a similar environment. Step 7 – After you recorded all the
insects and drained any water in the bottom and put back the meshes to there original places. Then place the can back in
the ground make sure it looks just like it was earlier.
Step 2 – Leave the can there for 8 hours then do “The
Procedures” again
The text above includes a single day (24 hour period).
